I agree with all of the good thoughts. Once all the hoorah has come and gone, it's all about the racing, and it was unbelievably good. I hope everyone watched the pack during the Saturday A, because there was fantastic racing going on there.
I have mixed thoughts about your "bads".
-Crowd control is always a problem at a big event. Those of us who are used to being able to wander everywhere at local tracks don't like the way big events are run, but that's life.
- I didn't buy much there, but didn't notice that the prices were any higher.
- My problems with the announcers are two.
-- Only one of them can be heard clearly in the Turn 3/4 stands. I don't know if he has the only good mic, or if he just has a better voice, or what, but I wish he did all the lineups.
-- All the announcers seem to think they are comedians and that they are participating in some kind of talk show. They flap constantly about nothing relevant. Giving the mic to Ms Sather is just one more piece of silliness.
- We're nervous about the "big" accidents. Are the cars going faster down the straights? The fact that so many got into the fence badly enough to require a red to fix it is worrisome. That isn't a really great fence.
- I was a fan of Sammy when he was a kid. As he grew, he seemed to become bitter and whiny, which is rather strange, considering the great success he has had. He's always been a terrible speaker, but I can accept that; it doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. What bothers me is some of the really nasty things I've heard him say during interviews. Nonetheless, he is one of the great drivers of his generation, and a damned good mechanic and engineer, so I have to respect him for that.
- I'm not happy with their adding a 5th night. On Saturday, we didn't arrive until 6:30. At dinner, I was talking about maybe going home on Saturday next year; of course, that was before the great racing I saw in the Cs, Bs and A. :-)
On the subject of "ugly", I think most new midgets and sprints are ugly. I would like to see all cars look traditional. I don't even like the modern, square edged bodies, let alone abortions like the F1.
