Even if it makes me seem cold hearted, I don't pay my admission fee to see people be given an opportunity. I pay to see the drivers that show up fight each other to make the show. At a place like Haubstadt, once they throw the green to start the feature, if things go well, it's an extended period of chaos that floods your brain with almost more than it can handle. That's what's addictive about this type of racing. The longer that goes without interruption, the better. Adding a couple of cars that are visibly slower than the others to that mix can not help things. It can only hurt. It makes it a lot more likely that a yellow(s) will occur. There was a race there last year, that everybody made it in and one car pretty much single handedly buzz-killed the entire feature. If they want to make the USAC show, there's one way to do it. Get faster.

In a day where it's hard to get cars you send a message that they are welcomed back. All they would of done was start run 2 or 3 laps and pull in. If there was a guy in the top 5 in usac points and a guy in the top 5 of mscs points not make the show they would of took provisionals and started 24 cars anyway. Why not give them the two provisionals and start all 24. Might be bias here because I would like to see Robert Bell make a show this year with the usac tour with him putting everything he has into making his dream come true.
I honestly said WTH? when stanbrough's facebook said there was going to be a consi with 24 cars.

On the backstretch we felt Dave's "Haubstadt jinx" was in play when he was qualifying, but were pleasantly surprised when he set quick time. Guess that's why we use clocks instead of eyeballing them to qualify.

From 2015 USAC Rule book.

1304 Provisional Starting Positions
The National Sprint Car Series will include a maximum of two (2) provisional starters in each feature event providing there are
eligible entrants who accept this option. (USAC/CRA events may utilize one (1) provisional)
The following conditions apply to provisional starters:
1. The top 20 in Entrant points are eligible for a maximum of four (4) provisional starts per season National and two (2) for USAC/CRA with the top Entrant in points, not qualifying for the feature, being the first recipient. If an eligible Entrant elects not to use a provisional, his/her position will be taken by the next highest in point standings. No guaranteed start money if provisional used.
2. First event for 2015: “Provisional” will be based on 2014 season ending top 20 car owner points.
3. Second event for 2015: “Provisional” will be based on current 2015 season top 20 car owner points.
4. Starting positions, point allocations and additional eligibility requirements can be found in 5.4C, 5.10 and 9.10C.

I get what you are saying, but I was Gas City many years ago, and a young driver with a family team had a big lead and was headed for his first win. 2 cars who were getting lapped for the second time in the race got together and crashed the guy going for his first win. These guys did not earn their way into the feature, but were allowed to start because they wanted to let them start the feature. The driver who lost told me later " no one ever gave me anything, I had to earn my way into the feature." Just another way to look at it.

Specified in the USAC event bulletin. 22 starters.

Don't need to contact USAC. From reading both of your responses, provisonal starters would have been added in addition to the 22 starters stated in the USAC event bulletin. The answer to my original question would have been yes, there would be 24 starters.

Yes those drivers would have been eligible.
You have to be eligible to receive the provisional.

One additional thing of which you should be made aware. The provisional starters give up last place money. So if we take a provisional and last place pays $500, that amount is deducted from any purse money we win (this way adding provisionals does not increase the cost to the promoter).

If we start 23rd and make it to 11th (which pays $700) we would recieve $200 for all the wear and tear. It doesn't make much sense to take a provisional unless you are running for points.

Which is normally why you only see like the top ten guys in points using provisionals.
