SSMA is proud to announce the opening of our new open wheel history section. We are going to attempt the building of one of the largest history sections on the web.

It is in the early stages of development but has over 300 photo's posted already with more on the way. Midgets, Sprints, Dirt Champ Cars, Indy and more.

Feel free to join us for a look at the past and get in on the fun.

Thanks for letting us know about this site. I can see spending a lot of time there, especially since it is snowing right now where I live. Keep up the good work!

Hey tex44,

Who owned the #50 car that Burke is shown driving at Terre Haute? It looks like a very nice car.

Bob,

The 50 car was owned by Danny Burke. At the time he bought the chassis from Jack Elam he had a Dirt Champ car he was building and a new Edmonds midget chassis sitting in the shop and didn't have time to build a sprint chassis so he ordered this one.

They ran the car for a year then sold it to whoever Bruce Walkup was driving for. Danny built a new car for the next season and they went to a track in Ill. for a USAC race ( believe it was Sherville or something like that, 1/2 mile paved track) and Walkup set fast time then Ronnie went out in the new car and set exactly the same time.

Hope that answered your question, maybe someone else knows more of the car's history after this.

Thanks,
tex44

Tex, the track you are referring to is most likely Illiana Speedway in Schererville, IN. It is a half mile paved track and is just a short ways from the Illinois line.
