The Joe James/Pat Oconnor show at Salem paired USAC and Must See Racing on the same track, same night. In qualifying the wing fast time was a little more than a second faster than the non wing car. The wing car was faster in the corner, but the non wing car was quicker from the flagstand to its shut off point, which was a bit earlier than the wing car for obvious reasons.

At any speedway there are a variety of factors that will determine the benefit of a wing. To use a minisprint with its low power to weight ratio compared to a 410 sprint car in a drag racing or absolute speed contest, the non wing car should be faster, unless the wing is trimmed to reduce the downforce it is used for. That is the case until the general shape of the car itself begins producing lift, something that will happen at speed much higher than you should ever propel a mini sprint. This is what the Sprint and Silver Crown cars battled at places like Gateway years ago, and "necessitated" the next generation Silver Crown cars.

Quite a while ago, Open Wheel magazine did a test at Thompson with a supermodified that ran both with and without the wing. Thompson is a high-banked 5/8 mile, and one of the fastest places the supers race.

Without the wing, the car was slightly faster at the end of the straights, but was much slower in the middle of the corners. Overall lap times were much faster with the wing.

Dan this is what I tried to tell this guy a lil faster down the straight but much faster through the corner thus more corner speed more overall speed

If the wing slowed down racecars, why did we start putting them on? For the looks?

The reason for the wing was safety back in the late 70's...it was proving that the wing absorbed impact and dissipated energy even thoug they made the car go faster... with todays cars being built better and more driver safety like hans and seats the non wing cars are on the rise cause of the better side by side racing along with not near the stress on motors because of the wing...

In my opinion you see closer racing with the 360 non wing sprints then ALL of sprint racing total...I do believe this is the future of sprint car racing....that is just this ole farts opinion

I believe if you look at the fastest Sprint Car records they are with non-wing cars. Dave Steele at Phoenix for one lap and Andy Michner with fastest Sprint Car race. 136 MPH average

I know Billy Pauch had the world record in a winged sprint car at 144 MPH at the Syracuse Mile and a couple years ago, I believe Sammy Swindell broke that with a lap 146?? MPH at I believe Bristol when they put dirt down or it could have been at Charlotte...
