For those of you heading to Kokomo Sunday and you are coming off of U.S.31 you will have to detour Morgan Street due to work on the railroad tracks at Morgan and Davis road. You can turn at the light at Menard's (North Street, just South of Morgan)) and go to Washington then left or you can go one light North past Morgan turn back west go to four way stop (by Chalk's) keep going west until you get to 35 ( Davis Road) and turn back south. Davis is open to North - South traffic but East -West traffic at Morgan and Davis is closed. If anything changes I will let you know A.S.A.P If you are coming 421-29-22 to Phyllips you will need to turn at the first street south of Morgan (Spraker street- -at the park) and run east to Washington, Rays drive inn is on the corner of Spraker and Washington. With just a few races left at Kokomo we need to pack the place, hope to see you there. Both detours are trailer friendly

It's funny, every time I get a chance to go to Kokomo I drive until I see some familiar gas station on the left as I drive up US 31 and turn left. I then kind of wiggle my way there. I've never really had any directions. I remember when my Dad raced there with Hal Minyard at the wheel we were always coming from Eldora the night before so I think we might have back doored it then. One night up there I was driving for Randy Johnson - about 6 weeks before I broke my leg up there in 1993 - and I some how lost my wallet and wedding ring out of my McHal Helmet bag. (I dumped my bag out trying to find my truck keys) I didn't realize it until I got almost back home to Indy when my ring finger felt naked. I turned around and drove all the way back up there. I found my wallet in the grass, but not the shinny wedding ring, so for about the third time I had to buy another cheap wedding ring from Service Merchandise. LOL. (None of you kids probably remember Service Merchandise) Kokomo sure has changed over the years. Jerry, if I get up there before summer's end, I will bring an old program to show you. It has a picture of Hal Minyard standing next to my Dad's car. We never won up there, but I do have an old trophy from a trophy dash that Hal won driving for Dad probably back in 1970 or 71. Man I still love the history. |

I remember S/M you paid for what you wanted then they sent it down the big conveyor belt from upstairs. If I remember right Best buy is where the S/M was in Kokomo. I remember Bill Lipkey giving me candy in 63 or 64 at Kokomo, I was always running around the bleachers back then.

I've lost so much weight that my ring slides right off now. I keep thinking I'll gain the weight back, but maybe I'm due to visit the walmart here in Brownsburg. I stopped wearing my ring racing. It bugged me sitting and waiting to get pushed off. LOL. |

Service Merchandise stores rocked. I remember going there as a kid. Once that S/M store went out didn't it become a Kroger's before they built that new one out on 31 on the North Side? Of course when Walmart was built that kinda put that Kroger out of business.

My wife and I bought our wedding rings at S/M in Evansville and then got married in the courthouse at Morganfield, Ky. for $12.00 25 years ago. We both sing like birds---"cheap...cheap....cheap.." Hey, we DID go to Ireland for our honeymoon 5 months later for 2 weeks. The last of the big-time spenders. Tom

Later on, that Christmas holiday, my wife's dad took the whole family to Jamaica and that is where I lost my first Service Merchandise wedding ring. I was snorkeling, it slipped off and I watched it float all the way to the bottom of the ocean. LOL. George Wilkins |
