Travis Welpott Wins in UMRA at Rushville


Travis Welpott drove the Sanders Motorsports #14 to victory on Saturday night at the Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville. The 1993 UMRA Champion was able to capitalize on problems that took early race leaders Doug Roland and Scott Petry out of 25-lap race.
Roland started from the pole position and early in the going looked to be cruising toward his first win until mechanical problems led to his exit from the race. Petry, in his first race of the 2009 season, inherited the lead and was headed to the victory until he flipped just seven laps from the finish. This paved the way for Welpott to hold off Brandon Gray to take the win. Terry Goff, Oogie Goff, and Brent Turner rounded out the top five. For Welpott, the win was the fulfillment of a dream that he had a night earlier in which he won the race and gave the trophy to co-car owner Susan Sanders, who is battling breast cancer.
Brent Turner was fast qualifier at 12.759 seconds. Patrick Wolf won the four-lap trophy20dash and a $20 certificate from The Dutch Mill Buffet in Millroy, Indiana. Jason VanOsdol, Ron Hamm, and Jeremy Rainwater took the heats which were ten laps in length. Non-wing mini sprints were also on the card with Sara Elrod and Garrett Abrams taking the eight-lap heats and then saw Elrod also take the 20-lap feature.
The next race for the UMRA TQ Midgets will be Saturday June 13 at the Mount Lawn Speedway in New Castle, Indiana.
