Windom Tops Eldora BOSS Sprintacular

The Eldora Speedway "Sprintacular" once again closed out the 2016 Rick's Trucks and Equipment BOSS sprint season. Forty-nine teams signed in for action at the iconic Rossburg, Ohio 1/2 mile field of dreams. Chris Windom, driving the Baldwin Brother Racing car #5 emerged victorious after another classic Eldora slide-job battle that featured a 4 car battle for the lead.

The large field of cars was divided into 6 heat races that ran with only one caution flag. Heat winners were Bill Rose, C.J. Leary, Matt Westfall, Chris Windom, Thomas Meseraull and Dustin Smith. Twin B-Main events found Brandon Whited and Drew Abel scoring victories. The night's only red flag flew in B-Main #1 when Justin Owen and Carmen Perigo made contact in turn 3. Owen spun up the track collecting South Dakota driver Brett Mellenberndt. Behind Mellenberndt, Rick Holley arrived on the scene and winding up getting upside down in the process. Everyone emerged unhurt and Holley was awarded the JF Construction "Hard Luck Award".

The 24 car main event was brought to the green flag by front row starters Dustin Smith and Dallas Hewitt. Hewitt jumped out to the early lead with Smith in tow while newly crowned 2016 champion Shawn Westerfeld battled Chris Windom for 3rd. The first 20 laps of the main event would run clean and green. Thomas Meseraull in the Stan Cortad #9x was on the move early advancing 5 spots in the first 2 laps. By lap #8, Hewitt had broken away to a clear lead from Smith as Windom closed in and took the runner-up spot away. A lap later, Hewitt began to encounter heavy lapped traffic as Windom closed the gap quickly.

The lapped traffic allowed Hewitt to repel the challenges from Windom. On lap 14, Smith was able to retake 2nd as Windom seemed the most effected by the cluster of lapped cars. With the runner-up battle held up, fourth place Thomas Meseraull was able to reel them in to make it a 3 car battle. Meanwhile, Hewitt was now on cruise control with more than a dozen length lead with 8 to go. Then came the game changer. The race's only caution flag flew working lap 20 when a chain reaction bumper tag situation sent Shane Cottle around for a spin.

The restart would find the 3 car battle for runner-up was now a 4 car battle for the win. Hewitt had used lapped cars to his advantage throughout the race and now with an open race track, he had a trio of challengers trying several grooves all over the race track. Chris Windom was finally able to wrestle the race lead from Hewitt on lap 23 with a perfect slide job in turn 2. Meseraull, who had started 10th, was also able to get past Hewitt in the final laps. At the stripe, it was Windom, Meseraull, Hewitt followed by Smith and Matt Westfall making up the top 5. Rounding out the top 10 were Westerfeld, Michael Fischesser, Bill Rose, Justin Grant and Nick Bilbee.

This was the final event of the 2016 season. Watch for details on the BOSS banquet which will be held on Saturday evening, November 12th. Congratulations to Shawn Westerfeld and his family and race team on becoming the first ever BOSS repeat champion.

Thanks to JF Construction for the Hard Luck Award. The support of the many businesses supplying these bonuses is another reason the BOSS series is one of the best things going in traditional Sprint car racing right now.

Unfortunately, dad's cars a little too far gone to run in the Trick or Treat 30s at Millstream next weekend like we'd planned, but the #86 will be visiting a track near you next season. (Side note, if anyone needs some help in the pits next weekend, I'm available. I can't stand to think of 6 months with no racing)

Thanks to the entire BOSS crew for providing a great sanctioning body for us to do what we love with.
