I ask this question having already researched many photos and diagrams, but cannot wrap my head around the dynamics and physics of the typical fuel system plumbing..

Heres what I DO understand:

Main line supplies the pump from the tank. 1 small line returns direct to the tank. 1 line supplies the barrel valve, with the shutoff lever in line.

Annnnnd, thats all folks. Hopefully someone can supply some good detail on how the bypasses operate and good diagrams so I can wrap my head around the system.

Lots of good information in Kinsler's Catalog & Handbook too, which is downloadable from their website.

I agree with Jim I downloaded the kinsler "bible". It will take a few reads to understand but it'll clear things up for you. I still learn something each time I go through it !

It shows the high speed as optional but its required for us. Typically all lines are -6 after the pump. The secondary bypass can be optional on 305's some run one and some don't. Some guys run more than one line back to the tank. Others run the main, secondary, and high speed to a manifold and then run a -8 or maybe a -10 return line back. The line from the tank to the filter and then to the pump is typically -12

I did find some stuff in the Kinsler handbook. Kind of helped out a bit. I'll probably need a good going-through on a car first hand to take it all in. I know theyre all mostly the same config. Maybe teams change it up a little bit here and there.
