I'm sure it's been asked, but I'm a first-timer to ISW...my dad and I are heading down there in a camper and picking up ISW at Terre Haute. I saw Putnamville has camping and I"ve been told Terre Haute does also...is there any registration, etc. that needs to be done at Terre Haute, Putnamville, Bloomington or Haubstadt to camp at the track?

Thanks in advance!

Our experience at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds is you pull in and park near an electric hookup of your liking West of the livestock barns and the fairgrounds security people (or whatever they may call themselves) will come around sometime either the evening of the race or relatively early the morning after.

The last time we camped on the fairgrounds in Terre Haute we were there for the Hulman Classic on our way to Indy for the 500. The fairgrounds people came around the morning after the race and charged us $20 for the one night of camping. I would question the person collecting the money just a bit to make sure they're authorized to collect. I say that because we've had people come around, not at Wabash Valley but in a similar situation, to collect money for camping and they weren't authorized to do so. Just a word to the wise.

It has been some time since I owned and camped there in an RV so I may not be up to date on the facility but here are some hints. I'm assuming you have a camping vehicle as opposed to tent camping. Terre Haute Action Track (THAT) is contained within the Vigo County Fairground area. They do have a fair sized rocked area adjacent to the track with minimal hookups (electric, probably not more than 20 amp, and water...no sewers, and to the best of my knowledge, no dump station) and a covered area nearer the track with like facilities. I would suggest you have plenty of electrical cord and water hose as the utilities are more or less central rather than located at individual sites. The fairgrounds also has a number of huge grassy (no hookups) parking areas which may be used by rv'ers and/or tent campers. FYI, the Fair Board phone # is (812) 201-3058. It would probably be to your advantage to contact them in advance regarding costs/reservations. Good Luck! LPS you know about; Bloomington and Haubstadt have huge no hookup parking areas. They both have excellent websites where they sometimes publish parking instructions.

Not quibbling with what you said about camping at Terre Haute Al, but just clarifying that there are hook-ups, both water and electric, on the extreme East side of the large grassy parking area to the West of the livestock barns. This area is Southwest of the covered grandstands and straight South of the turn 4 bleachers. There are a line of utility poles that run parallel to, and just West of, the North-South road that have electric hookups and there are water hydrants along there, as well. There is no shade in this area, however, just to the East across the road from that large grassy area is a gravel area with a line of trees on the East edge. This area is directly across the road from the livestock barns and there are water and electric hookups there but I think one would have to get there very early to get those spots.

As Al aptly pointed out, it may be a good idea to call the fairgrounds to get specific details, especially for the covered sights Al speaks of. The Vigo County Fair is going on right now (but will be over by ISW) so you shouldn't have any problem speaking to someone with the information you need in regards to fee's, etc.

Yeah, I think we're both alluding to the same area(s). I should have been a bit more descriptive regarding the relationship to the stands, etc. I'm not real sure the people who manage this operation have established rules or just play it by ear. It's been 6 or 7 years since we were there in the motorhome and at that time the charges were "variable". I don't think the facilities have changed much, if any. Thanks.
