I've been using a 04 to 06 R1 Yamaha but they getting hard to get.
(there are no more 800 to 1500 mile motors any more)
In your opinion what late model engine is best and why you think so.
Thanks

Personally, buying an "unknown" motor wouldn't bother me at all, it is easy to ck the compression or leak down before you load it up, so I would let that make my decision, age or miles really don't have much to do with that decision, IMHO! Bob

As of late 1,000 cc motors have become hard to find, across the board.

I've seen that the GSXR motors seem to be the ones to have right now as far as horsepower is concerned, but their design pretty much requires you buy a billet oil pan for them. They also have an external oil cooler that you have to find a place for in the car. On top of that, demand for the motor has pushed the price up considerably higher than other brands. One other aspect I noticed, is that the water pump is right next to the output shaft. Kind of a tender spot right next to the chain, in my opinion...

I personally am still using the 07-08 R1, as they are less costly to purchase, you can run the stock oil pan without issue, and you don't have the external oil cooler to worry about. On the flip side, it's a bit down on horsepower over the GSXR, so it's at a disadvantage on a tacky track.

That should get the ball rolling, anyone else want to chime in?

Bill

Miles don't matter it's how they been cared for. I won't buy them with super high miles but there isn't anything wrong with one that was babied her whole life just to be laid down at 7k miles.
Look for leak down 8% or less, and pull the pan to look for gremlins..

A 05-06 gsxr with around 6k miles whopped out buts on Saturday. Bone stock.

Andy

He hadn't even burned all that street carbon off of the piston yet.
