UAW and USSA Officials Announce Sprint Car Challenge Series Partnership

Leadership of The Greater Marion County UAW Cap Council and the United States Speed Association have announced that the UAW will serve as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2013 USSA Sprint Car Challenge Series. The racing series will be known as the Sprint Car Challenge Series, Built by the UAW. Additionally, the UAW will be named the Official Workforce of USSA.

The name of the series is designed as a tribute to the men and women of the UAW who work in the automotive, aerospace and agricultural implement industry, proudly building the cars, trucks, farm machinery and aerospace vehicles American business and families trust.

UAW-represented workplaces range from multinational corporations, small manufacturers and state and local governments to colleges and universities, hospitals and private non-profit organizations.

The UAW has more than 390,000 active members and more than 600,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

There are more than 750 local unions in the UAW. The UAW currently has 2,500 contracts with some 1,700 employers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

A unique strength of the UAW is the solidarity between its active and retired members. A solid majority of the union's retirees stay actively involved in the life of their union, participating in 703 retiree chapters and playing a vital role in the UAW's community action program.

“After working with the USSA group, we found that the values and principals they use in their business are a great fit with ours,” said the UAW’s Danny Ernstes. “The Sprint Car Challenge Series, Built by the UAW gives us an opportunity to demonstrate what the UAW stands for and how we benefit the communities where our members live and work,” Ernstes elaborated.

The UAW is targeting the sponsorship of the Sprint Car Challenge Series, Built by the UAW to explore the prospects for the motorsports industry to use the UAW membership and their partner employers to build the precision products that the racing industry relies on. The membership of the UAW will also use the sponsorship to support awareness of the March of Dimes, the charity of UAW Region 2B.

“It’s exciting to have a group like the UAW demonstrate their belief in the way we do business,” USSA’s President Don Kenyon explained. “As Danny says, we seem to ‘get’ each other and believe our partnership can benefit everyone involved,” Kenyon went on to say.

The USSA Sprint Car Challenge Series, Built by the UAW is a championship series for non-wing pavement sprint cars. The Series will be contested on short tracks in the upper Midwest. USSA has targeted 11 short tracks in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois to build their 2013 racing schedule. The center piece event of the Sprint Car Challenge Series, Built by the UAW is the 65th running of the Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson, (IN) Speedway. Officials expect the Sprint Car Challenge Series Built by the UAW to kick off with the 100-lap Glen Niebel Classic at Anderson Speedway in mid-April 2013.

I have no issue with the UAW sponsoring a race series. The UAW needs to grow if it wants to survive. I just wonder how well they are going to react when a XXXX chassis is sitting in victory lane.
