TATE MARTZ WINS AT THE JEFFERSON COUNTY FAIR
On Friday evening July 15th the Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Vincennes University competed at the Jefferson County Fair in Madison, Ind. Two-time and defending champion Tate Martz came out on top of a hard fought battle with Nick Speidel to score his third win of the season.
Jason Willis topped the twenty car field in qualifications when he set a new track record with a lap of 15.095 seconds. Brett Hankins won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel, heat winners were Rick Robinson and Speidel, and Willis won a special non-point exhibition race.
Corey Eaglin started on the front row and took the lead when the green flag waived to start the twenty-five lap feature. Speidel moved to the front on lap three with Martz taking over the runner-up spot on lap five.
In a repeat of the last MTQRL race, Martz began to pressure Speidel for the lead. A lap thirteen restart was all Martz needed as he finally made the pass going down the backstretch.
Martz led the final thirteen laps in the Roger Ramsey Vincennes University/Old Canal Smokehouse three-quarter midget to score his first win on the tight fifth mile oval. Speidel, 2010 Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Year CJ Leary, Ronnie Combs and Rob Walton rounded out the top five. Eaglin, Bill James, Cody Kiewitt, Robinson and Jon Steed completed the top ten.
Eaglin’s sixth place finish garnered him the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race Award and the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver Award went to both Chris Mann and Brett Hankins whose cars suffered mechanical difficulties.
The next race on the MTQRL schedule is Thursday night July 21st at the Hendricks County Fair in Danville, Ind.
