The tentative 2011 Gas City I69 Speedway schedule has been posted on the Gas City website. Test & Tune is set for April 2 with first race on April 8. Will have USAC Sprints on April 15, King of Indiana Sprints on May 13, USAC National Midgets on Wed., June 8, Modified Special on June 24, USAC Sprint Week on July 8, Lewis Morgan Memorial special for Sprints and Modifieds on September 2, and last points race on September 23 with final race and awards on September 30. As soon as things become definite, I will have it posted.
Not trying to be critical, but I'm really disappointed with the lack of special shows. I guess if fans want to see something other than the regular 4 classes they will have to go somewhere else most of the time. The regular show is a very good one, but I miss the Gas City schedules from around 2000-2004 when they would have specials throughout the year and bring in a wide variety of fans and racing classes. There were some great winged sprint, 360 sprint, and late model specials back then. Jiggs had a great philosophy. If you can bring in people who don't normally come there (fans of winged sprints, late models, etc.) and show them what a great place it is, they will want to come back for the regular shows. Its still a great track, the schedule just seems to have less variety every year.
Its a shame they didn't give the ASCS SOD vs NRA winged 360 show in 2011 a chance after getting rained out last year. I think it would have been a great show.
i make to I-69 speedway about 6 or 8 times a year. every time i go there it's a special show. some of those weekly shows are better than the big ones. i see they still have 5 or 6 special events on their schedule. hell of lot better than any weekly run track in Michigan (unless you like wings) for special events. one wing show a year or none would be enough for GC. Indiana is such a treasure of sprint car racing without wings. why ruin it.
I don't think racing some other non-regular classes once in a while would ruin anything. For example, May 6 and July 15 the track is closed. Why? I know its probably a KISS or USAC race at Bloomington in May and the July date is sprintweek. I know they don't want to compete with those races, but why is that a reason to not race at all? Bring in something like winged sprints, 360's, or late models on those nights. If you're a fan and all you are interested in is non-wing sprints you will probably be at another track those nights anyway, so why do you care? It just gives me the impression that the track has decided if they can't race non-wing sprints they don't care enough about the other classes to race at all.
