It is being reported on the Jalopy Journal Vintage Sprint Car thread that Mutt Anderson of Xenia, Ohio went to the big race track in the sky earlier today.

Mutt was the example of a gentleman's racer. He would race you tough yet with a smile. His equipment the #51 car that McCluskey drove to a championship was top notch. Painted sharply and cromed.
As a kid growing up I was luckly enough to see his cars up close and got to know the man.

Mutt was a fine racer and a fine man. He led an extraordinary life, and it was an honor to get to know him and spend time in conversation with him.

Always had a smile and a greeting for you when he met you.

When I drove for Lee Elkins I was introduced to Mutt and was also down to his place one day when he was rendering two pigs. Bill Baldwin, the fellow I drove for that weekend, and myself, was awarded the, "Mountain Oysters" for us to take and fry up latter on that day. They didn't taste too bad with six or eight beers to wash them down.

I have to agree with all of the above posts. Mutt was a true Gentleman and his cars were always fast and the best looking cars on the track.I had the pleasure of meeting him at the annual convention of The National Association of Auto Racing Fan Clubs for the last few years that he was able to attend.He will be missed.My condolences to his family. Clarence E. “Mutt” Anderson, 94, of Xenia, passed away Thursday morning, June 3, 2010, at Hospice of Dayton. He was born June 20, 1915, in Xenia, the son of Cloisy and Mary O’Connor Anderson. He was a member of St. Brigid Church and owned Anderson Abattoir for many years and became interested in a hobby of building racing cars. Some of the great names in auto racing drove his cars. He worked on cars for Roger McCluskey, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti, Eddie Sachs, Troy Ruttman, Mike Nazaruk and Johnny Rutherford. Mutt’s Dreyer Sprint car #4 had driver Everett Saylor win the 1937 Central States Racing Association Championship. In 1966, with McCluskey piloting his Chevy-powered No. 51 machine, he won the National Sprint Car Championship. He was enshrined in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1968. He was inducted into the National Association of Auto Racing Fan Clubs Hall of Fame in 2005, before the 89th running of the Indianapolis 500. In November 2009, he was enshringed in the Dayton Speedway Hall-of-Fame. He later became a USAC official and had a close bond with the Brickyard. Mutt also served 35 years on the Xenia Civil Service Commission. He is survived by his wife, Betty (McPherson) Anderson, whom he married July 18, 1936, two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip (Elaine) Anderson and Michael (Sherry) Anderson, all of Xenia, four grandchildren, Kirk (Diane) Anderson, Kent (LuAnn) Anderson, Scott (Kelley) Anderson, and Tracey Carlson, eight great-grandchildren, Lindsay (Jasen) Dodds, Lori Anderson, Rachael Anderson, Austin Anderson, Avery Anderson, Matthew Carlson, Alex Carlson, and Michael Carlson, a step-grandchild, Micah (Justin) Windsor and two step-great-grandchildren, Blaike and Adasyn Windsor He was preceded in death by three brothers, George Anderson, Frank Anderson and William “Bill” Anderson and granddaughter’s husband, Greg Carlson. Services will be held at 10am, Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Deacon Roger Duffy officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm Monday, at St. Brigid Church, 312 Fairground Rd., Xenia. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH, 45420, or to the Dayton Speedway Hall of Fame at DaytonSpeedwayLives.com. I haven't seen him for a number of years. It hardly seems possible he was 94 years old. Time flies.

Agree with the above post. He was a good friendly person. I was fortunate enough to see the number #51 race a few times. It was a work of art.
