Chargin’ Charles Kicks Off ASCS Canyon Title Defense Saturday at USA!

Darland Set to Take on Canyon Region Contenders

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 8, 2010) – Buckeye, Arizona’s Charles Davis, Jr., delivered car owner Jim Massey his first series championship by capturing the 2009 Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region title.

Davis begins the defense of that title this Saturday night when the ASCS Canyon Region launches the 2010 season atop USA Raceway’s 3/8-mile clay oval in Tucson, AZ.

A stout field of contenders will be even tougher on opening night, as wingless open wheel ace Dave Darland will make a rare Arizona appearance in an effort to take the money and run back to Indiana.

A triple crown champion with titles in the Sprint Car, Midget and Silver Crown ranks, Darland rallied from the tail of a “B” Main after heat race issues to finish fifth in last November’s wingless portion of the Western World Championships at USA Raceway.

Darland will pilot the BRAT Racing/Parker Stores No. 8 entry this Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Davis will try to add a 15th career ASCS Canyon Region score aboard the Massey No. 50 machine on Saturday night after reeling off three wins en route to the 2009 crown that he claimed by a 55-point margin over Phoenix shoe R.J. Johnson.

Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at USA Raceway is slated to go green at 6:45 p.m.

The 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval is located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit 268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales. For more information, contact the track at 520-574-8515.

The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is currently slated for 15 overall nights of competition in 2010, including 13 nights in Arizona and a two-night Fourth of July weekend in New Mexico.

In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of eleven different Regions throughout the nation.

RJ Johnson went from a 20th place start to the lead in 15 laps! DD ran him down and passed him on the last lap for the win.
Great win for Dave, but a heartbreaker for RJ.
