Did I hear that right? $50,000 purse, and $13,000 to the winner, in 1977?? Back when a gallon of gas was 62 cents and the average income was $13,500?? I dont get it..

That's when the Hulman Classic was truly a National event, not just another sprint car race. Along with the TV money there was a lot of local sponsorship and lap money.

Thanks to all for posting these up! I remember ABC's Wide World of Sports as the only place you could see any racing at all. But,you had to be willing to sit through ski jumping, synchronized swimming, sumo wrestling and olympic tiddlywinks to see it! Now,you can see live flag to flag coverage of some of the most boring crap, with the most inane announcers.I think the tiddlywinks were better than this! And,how about Chris Economaki riding back to the pits on the wrecked car on the hook! I'd pay a dollar to watch Larry Mac do that today!

Good Stuff!!
Mrs. MacElreath saying "This is like winning the 500 in the Sprint Car division" makes ya wonder what happened to this race?? Lil' Shu might be on to something, maybe paying some bigger $, might bring some stature back??? Never knew (or fading memory??) Jim Hettinger ran dirt Sprint Cars?? That was cool, thanks for posting it!! ![]() |

Jackie howerton was a hero of mine. Thanks for the Mar-Car footage as it brings back great memories of OKC in the early 70's. Leep, Taylor, Hahn, Copeland, a Madden, Reed, Humphrey and Howerton, that was some fierce local racing.
