FRIDAY STORY

Wease goes from third to first in slam-bang finish

By RON WARE

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Billy Wease has his sights firmly fixed on reaching the top level of NASCAR.

But no matter where his career path takes him, the 21-year-old Hoosier may never win another race the way he did Friday in the USAC midget feature that capped the opening night of the 10th annual Rumble in Fort Wayne.

In a scene perhaps better suited to the movie Days of Thunder, Wease went from third to first in the final 30 yards, squeezing past the spinning cars of Dave Darland and Derek Bischak before a disbelieving crowd of nearly 4,000 at the Memorial Coliseum Expo Center.
