A few other observations if you made it down this far:

- The 70 & 71 were of course, Dizz Wilson cars. Dizz had some great drivers in his stuff over the years, with 2 of the best in this race.
- Audie Schwartz and Chick Hale drove the first two winged cars I had ever seen.
- The Wilmots (Middletown, OH) from this race are related to Steve Wilmot who races now. I don't recall just how.
- The Detmer 7 was a flathead Ford that Bud and his wrenching brother Dale had a lot of fun with. Made some money back then running 7th and 8th a lot without great expenses.
- Whitey Freeman, also from Middletown, was Stock Car Track Champ one season driving a #86 Hudson Hornet as I recall.
- Bud Holmes (#76) from Indy later assumed track operator/promoter duties. The 'Burg almost didn't recover from that disaster.
- Flagman Ray Schaike (the best I ever saw, just ahead of Tom Wilson) and Announcer Paul "Shadow" Kennedy had been pretty formidable drivers themselves running a lot at the old Dayton Speedway and Cincy Racebowl I believe.


Lastly, I should have dropped in this qualifier from the beginning of these posts, but I make no claims as to the complete accuracy of name spelling or race finishes (well, I'd bet I got the top 10 right). I did my best on race night to get stuff down, but I have to tell ya.......back in those days (40+ years ago) I was lugging in a very heavy cooler and leaving a few hours later with a much lighter load........in the cooler, that is. :checkered:

Would the Ron Fisher at this race be the same Ron Fisher from Centralia, IL who later ran Late Models?:confused:

I believe, but could be way off base here, that this Ron Fisher was from Kokomo, IN and might be related to FISHER79 and/or dfish of the IOW board. You'd think I would be more aware of the various "Fish's". :wink

It is indeed my grandpa, the "Kokomo" version.

Concerning the Wilmonts of Middletown, I believe it's Steve who runs now. His father was Charles [BUD] who lost his eyesight in an Eldora crash I witnessed. I understand he passed away just a couple of years ago.
For many years after the accident, Bud stayed active and even ran daily at the Middletown "Y". We had a number of bench racing conversations in the steam room. His version of the accident was quite interesting and might be worth repeating here at some point, subject to the families thoughts of course.
The above is from an old man's memory [although not as old as Fish] so corrections are welcome.

Wow.... the old man made tow money by setting fast time ... heat races , trophy dashes and fast time paid money back then ... oh and it was home made powered by a 327 with a 12 inch RR tire ...
