Tony Jones to run the Lou Vermeil Classic

Lakewood, CA. – The 2007 USAC/CRA Champion Tony Jones and car owner Mark Alexander have made the decision to compete at this year’s Louie Vermeil Classic at the famous Calistoga one-half mile dirt oval during the Labor Day weekend (September 6-7) at the Napa County Fairgrounds. The Norco, CA. charger won the August 1, sprint car main event at Perris Auto Speedway and should be considered a strong entry for the second annual Vermeil Classic. The race will mark the first time that Jones and the Alexander Race Team have competed at the historic track.

Following retirement at the end of last year, Jones returned to action at the PAS on March 28, of this year after consulting with his family about a return. He sat out race trips to Manzanita (February 20-21), Las Vegas (February 25) and the Perris opener on February 28, still undecided about his sprint car future. Following a friendly parting with driver David Cardey, the race team decided to run a limited schedule for the remainder of the year. Plans to compete only at Perris Auto Speedway seemed to fit the low budget team’s race plans. Jones then decided to return and was welcomed back with open arms by both his many fans and the Torrance based race team on March 28, at Perris. He sat out the big Fourth of July race this year after injuring his back on the job at Orange County Tank Testing in Anaheim. He celebrated a big win at the traditional holiday race last year at Perris and as a result of the injury was unable to defend his title. His August 1, win was followed by his trademark climb to the top of the Perris front straight fence that is always greeted by cheers from his many race fans. Perris track announcer Scott Daloisio, has called Jones the most popular sprint car driver at the southern California race plant. According to the “Open Wheel Cowboy” he is in the best shape of his life and is really looking forward to challenging the historic Calistoga half-mile. The team plans to bring two race cars on their trip north.

The race team was recently featured at a fund raiser held at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge in Lakewood that raised more than $1,500 as a result of many race fans’ generosity. More than 10 race cars, drivers and owners were on hand for the benefit.

Tony Jones and the Mark Alexander race team are sponsored by SCRAFAN.com, Ferreira Dairy, La Villa Mexican Restaurant and Catering, VP Fuels, Communication Inovations, Scotty Stallmo, the Chop House Restaurant in San Pedro, Doug’s Auto Body, J&D Performance, DRC Chasis, Berdoo Auto Body, Larry Murakami Contracting, Ray’s Trucking, Extreme Mufflers, Garnica Trucking and the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge.
