Man, do those pics bring back some memories! The water from the infield is from flooding. Cecil 98 can weigh in on this one also. Before the pump system was put in the infield, anytime the Ohio river came up say to 42-45 feet (flood stage in Cincinnati being 52 feet), the track and infield and the surrounding ares would be very "mushy", but as soon as the river would start going down it was like a giant hydraulic system, the water would come thru the ground like old faithful! Mel and Tim Johnson talked to Rudy and myself quite often about those times. Can't quite remember the exact year (92 possibly) but the burg only got about 6 races in that year, due to major flooding. Mel had alot of pics of that, with water totally covering the entire track about 6 feet up on the old front stretch fence. He has some pics of Tommy Bipes with a ski-doo doing some fast laps, seeing he wasn't in a car! Even with the pump system, when the river is up now it will still "screw" with you a bit. There is also an underground stream under turn one. I remember the first time I watered all nite on a Friday on the old 1/4 mile, Mel told me " When you come up on turn one, cut one of the sprayers off, kick it outta grandma gear to second and fly thru there, then as soon as you get thru one go back to grandma and pour it to it!. Later that day he explained the underground stream to me and sure enough, Turn 1 was the wettest place on the track.

Oh well, got carried away there, once again great pics!

Driving the race car in that pic was Dale Detmer, driving the boat was his brother Bud, who normally drove the race car. Bud died in a water ski accident if I remember correctly. I'm guessing the guy driving the pace car could be Bill Broderick (a PR guy who did some work for NASCAR and Union76). Bill drove the pace car quite a bit at Lawrenceburg, however, I could be completely wrong about who is in it in this pic. It's possible that it could Roy Mattlin or one of the Nopperts (promotors at the time).

PS..fishnman is correct about the flooding. I spent many-a-spring nights and days with rented pumps, camping out on the crown of turns 3 and 4 pumping out the track. My alarm was the pump motors shutting off. Had to refuel them and then go back to sleep until they ran out again. Also you could find little "mini-geysers" springing up out of the track surface! We would take a garden trowel and dig around the geyser and actually find fresh water mussels in the track!!

PSS...someone can correct me on the picture but, that is my memory of it.

If you scroll down aways the black #3N car is a brand new 1978 Nance driven by "Wild Bill" Owens and owned by Jimmy Sullivan. That car was my first steady sprint car ride. I drove it from 1981-83 with the Johnny Lightning paint job on it. The winter of 83-84 we sold the Nance and bought the Kerry Norris Neibel built car.[COLOR="Black"]

Cecil, memories serve me right Bill Boderick was also the announcer in the mid 60's. "Wild Bill" Owens was also known by many as "Way Out Willie" when he drove for Buster Lowther in the 60's. What a crazy guy and fun to be around.

you could be correct about Bill doing some announcing. I was in grade school back then! I do remember "Shadow" Kennedy also doing some announcing in the 60's

That is in fact Dale and Bud Detmer A family involved in and around LBurg Speedway probably for some 50+ Years. I used to work with Dale for a couple years and he told me many stories

Larry Detmer (Dales Son) Still drives occasionally and builds motors for Pure and Mods and I met another Detmer at a Frolic a couple months ago

Chuck, thankful for dedicated people that make this sport possible.

I can recall a photo in NSSN around Indy time ['92?] showing water nearly up to the flagstand--the entire track under water in late May. Yes, it was a heavy track all summer.
I can also recall many August shows where the water truck was never seen. Ah, the good ole days!
