Gage Walker Forges through Wayne County
By Jessica Jenkins

Returning to POWRi competition after mechanical problems sidelined him for about a month, Gage Walker was eager to climb back into his car. With a larger than normal field, it was going to be an uphill battle at Wayne County Speedway for the 2015 POWRi midget finale.

In just his second time at the southern Illinois track, Walker fought a loose car in the second heat race, finishing sixth after starting on the inside of the third row. Undeterred, the 17 year old moved on to the fourth Qualifier. Starting from the tenth position, he started marching his way up and reached seventh with a car he described as being “really fast” before running out of laps. This lined him up on the outside of row six in the B feature, and he was determined to be one of the six drivers transferring to the A. He gained a few spots at the start before a car ahead of him got out of shape and, in the process of avoiding it, Walker slid his own car sideways and spun out. With not enough laps to reach one of the coveted transfer spots, the Indianapolis native took care of his red #7x and went home with a 15th place finish.

Recapping his night at the Jason Leffler Memorial, Walker explained, “We missed the setup all night. I drove over my head a little bit too. We had a good car for the qualifier but we were just off for the heat race and B main. I made a few mistakes and it cost us from making the A. We learned and will hopefully be ready for DuQuoin.”

Before heading to DuQuoin in December, Walker may be racing in the first ever Indy Invitational. In order to do so though, he will need enough votes to earn the bonus spot set aside for a fan vote winner.
