It has came to my attention there is a possibility of the demolition of the New York State Fairgrounds mile and grandstands after the 2015 season to build a new structure for future fair concerts, etc. PLEASE help by signing the petition in the link below to try and help save one of our greatest facilities and one of our nation's only miles still left for racing. Thank you!

As of today, the petition to save the Moody Mile has over 1,700 signatures.

When you talk about the history that will be lost, think about this: The New York State Fairgrounds has had a very long and rich tradition of auto racing that dates back to 1905. That's when the first speed trials were conducted. Later, in 1909, the first AAA championship race was held at Syracuse with Barney Oldfield the winner (BARNEY OLDFIELD for cryin’ out loud!).

Indianapolis 500 champions Ralph DePalma, Tommy Milton, Frank Lockhart, Ray Keech, Bill Cummings, Wilbur Shaw, Mauri Rose, Johnnie Parsons, Bob Sweikert, Sam Hanks, Rodger Ward, Jim Rathmann, and Al Unser have ALL won on the Moody Mile of Syracuse.

Also…
• AAA Champions Bob Carey, Rex Mays and Tony Bettenhausen have won at Syracuse.
• USAC Champions Larry Dickson, Gary Bettenhausen, Pancho Carter, Sheldon Kinser and J.J. Yeley have won at Syracuse.
• World of Outlaws Champions Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, and Dave Blaney have won at Syracuse.

Of course, Syracuse is probably best known today for its stock car history. Early NASCAR races contested at Syracuse were won by Tim Flock, Buck Baker, Ned Jarrett and Curtis Turner. More recently, the track has played host to championship races for the modified stock cars. The modified has been the marque division in the Northeast for the last half century or more and since 1972 Syracuse has hosted its Super Bowl, a race first known as the Schaefer 100. That race has grown through the years to become the multi-day spectacle known as Super DIRT Week. While the drivers who have won this race are heroes to many who grew up in the Northeast, some from outside the area will still recognize the names Reutimann, Tobias, Balough, Johnson, Treichler, McCreadie, Brightbill, Horton, Decker and Hearn (just to name a few). Each of these men reached modified racing immortality by winning its crown jewel, Syracuse.

Why this track hasn’t been declared a National Landmark is beyond me.

Does anyone know what the frequency is that there are actually races held there anymore? Now I do not know the statistics of that question at this time, but if I were a betting man I would bet my life's savings that if more shows were to be scheduled there, they probably wouldn't even be considering the demolition of the track as it would no longer be to them just a money pit to maintain, but an actual profitable asset. Same with almost any type of venue, once the facility that said venue is/was held at becomes more of an expenditure than something that will at least break even most will begin to look for other ways to use the space that is being occupied. Now while I agree with all that this is a terrible shame, I would rather see sanctioning bodies working to try to schedule more shows there and actually put the track back to use again and start generating revenue than just see a petition for it to not be torn down and then it just sit there unused. If the demolition is blocked by this petition then that's a good thing, but if the track just sits there empty, then the issue is likely to just come back up at the soonest possible time. Not to mention that she sounds like she's never even attended a race in her lifetime(she's not enlightened like the rest of us).
