Any word this morning on Caleb Armstrong? He took a nasty flip during Thursday's feature on opening night of the the Belleville Midget Nationals. Armstrong, running second, jumped the cushion and rode the top of the third turn fence.

Caleb was released from the hospital this morning. Sore, but apparently okay.

I'm glad to hear that he's been released from the hospital, Wes. I was worried when I saw that one happen. It was a really violent flip, at high speed. Caleb's lucky to have only gotten minor injuries out of one like that.

I was quite worried when the camera panned away from the scene, and then the announcer never said a word about him for the rest of the show. Fortunately, I saw the message on Bryan Clauson's twitter here on IOW, saying that he had gotten out of the car on his own.

"Feeling better today just sore thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers."

Saw that he Tweeted this around noon.

Dick, everyone in the crowd was concerned when NOTHING was said about Caleb's condition or progress at the site. As I'm sure you're aware, announcers normally will let fans know that the driver was alert, talking to rescue workers, etc., but it was like someone had suddenly hit the mute button in the press box. The fact that it took so long to get Caleb out of the car and the slow pace at which the ambulance left the track, with no siren, left us all seriously concerned. As it turned out, he was checked thoroughly Thursday night at the ER and released. Had it been up to him, he would have raced Saturday night, but wisdom prevailed and Danny Stratton was called in as an able replacement. Contrary to what Bryan tweeted, Caleb did not get out of the car on his own, but rather on a back board. Kudos to the safety crew for a job well done.

The saving grace in Caleb's incident is that the car continued to barrel roll until it finally lost momentum and stopped. In other words, it never hit anything to cause it to stop suddenly, which case probably would have increased his chances of serious injury. The young man is tough, and Saturday night he was only suffering from some achiness in his head and shoulders. It's good to be 20 years old, right?
