I don't know a hole lot about ecu tuning, fuel maping, etc. as all my other racing experience is with carbs, or leaving the cycle motor bone stock. For a modern mini-sprint motor (R1 for example), is the altering of the ecu, thur a Power Commander or Flashing (re-programing) a must?
The way I understand it, you can make your motor run cooler, and increase the hp (some). What's not to like about that?
Second, if I am understanding the benefits correctly. Does anyone have any experience with Flash-Tune (http://www.flash-tune.com/?wpsc-prod...ning-interface) ? What is appealing is that it mods the existing ecu without additional parts.
Thoughts anyone? Advance Thanks!

Google Guhl motors I understand he is the garu with a stock box re-flash.

Tuning with power commander isn't rocket science but start out slow and work up.

I'd recommend you speak with Guhl or Hyper for their perspective. I upgraded our R1 with a Guhl airbox on gas for last season and had him reflash the ECU to compensate for the change. This year we decided to go with the Hyper eco-version to alcohol, and they re-flashed the ECU accordingly. The re-flash maps used by Guhl and Hyper are the result of much research and effort on their part, so you are really paying for their knowledge on how to best address the non-stock parameters of our application. This gives you a baseline, but if you decide later that you want to make map changes, another reflash is required. The Power Commander or other flash tools allow you to re-map in a similar fashion, but then continually adjust for variables to optimize performance beyond the base-line. To Dad's point, now you are doing the research and making tuning decisions, which may be better in the long run, but not a requirement to make it run.

e-85 tunes seem to be the popular thing in our area.... with little modification and high volume pump and regulator cars make upwards of 15 more hp and run cooler for about $600 total with the tune, modifications and pump and regulator plus E-85 runs about a $1.89 a gal here, guhl has been doing alot of E-85, its the next best choice to alcohol for less then half the price
