A jitney a is coaster racer made by kids. An old wooden ironing board made a great chassis (or a piece of plywood about the same size). The axles were held onto a 2 x 4 by bending nails over it. The wheels were usually baby buggy wheels or lawnmower wheels (buggy wheels were better). The front axle (2 x 4) was bolted with a single bolt at the front of the ironing board. You steered it with your feet or, you could attach a piece of rope to the end of each side of the 2 x 4 axle and steer it with the rope. We raced them down streets with a fairly steep grade. I grew up in Sayler Park in Cincinnati Ohio and lots of us built and raced them when we were in grade school. However, Larry G is also correct. That kind of gitney (asian taxi)was pulled around by a person for a small fee.

very good craig....i got a little fancy with a few of mine and put a cage on them. if you wanted to dirt track just put big wheel tires (PLASTIC) on it and slide around corners.

Chris, the last one I built (6th grade) had a steering wheel, with the rope windings, and a friction brake. However, being that it was back in the 60's, mine were all USAC jitneys!!
No rollcages!!!!!!

BTW.....Big Wheels hadn't been invented yet when I was building my jitneys!! LOL
