A local race car driver died Friday night from injuries he received when a tire he was inflating apparently exploded. It happened around 5 p.m. at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. David Tarter, 30, of Chico, was reportedly working on his sprint car prior to the Friday evening races, when the accident happened. Witnesses say he received head injuries when the tire exploded. Tarter was rushed to Enloe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. This is from khsltv.com in Chico Ca.

This is terrible news. This type of accident has always been in the back of my mind everytime I've worked with tires.

Our thoughts and prayers for his family in this difficult time. Another reminder that this sport we all love has a dark side at times.

I'm with you Don, tires and portable air tanks just simply make me nervous as hell, even at low pressures, it ain't usually a good outcome, had a guy bring back an air tank one time, he said man, they must really have it hot inside there, it was cold outside, no telling how much pressure he had in it, he just hooked it up, and walked off. Bad news, I've been around when the old style truck rims would blow a ring, not many of those old guys left either. RIP, and God Speed. Bob!
