Whats the funniest racing orientated thing you've ever seen ? You know, a good "here, hold my beer and watch this" moment ? I would have to say being when I grew up around openwheel racing most of the folks were farmers, and such, not a whole lot of monkeying around. Then I sent years racing mx, and although there were crazys around they were pretty much diliuted just by the sheer number of guy's competing. That being said I would have to say I saw more in five years of speedway motorcycles then 40 years in all the other racing sports, .
Well my funniest to make a long story short was watching someone start their bike by hand while one guy was standing on each side holding it up. To do it, usually on a bike stand, you slowly rotate the engine in reverse, a couple chuggs later it wont move, then you rotate other way, quickly by hand. If done right and your bikes in good tune, bada bing. This however should never be done in your den, thru two inside walls and out your front picture window judging by the outcome that evening. It all started going bad when the rider didnt listen to his begging wife and started looking for fuel. The bike started just fine, now you have to have the clutch engaged, so your rear tire is always turning otherwise you'll burn the clutch right up. Of couse now that the bike was revving, alot at this point, the two guys holding it up were getting nervous cause they're fingers were about half a inch from getting tore off. A speedway bike goes from zero to top speed in 3 seconds and doesnt care if anyone is aboard or not. The only saving grace is that the bike shutoff instantly after launching and launch is what they do, I've seen em jump close to 30 ft. high and go backwards not fowards when launched. They come around so fast that before you can react the bike has looped back over your head. Anyhow, his tire must have just touched and like a sick magic trick the speedwaybike disappeared ! It didnt take long to find it, follow the missing walls and picture window right to it. The bike was pronounced dead (literally shot like a downed horse) and the guy never rode speedway again. It was and still is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
