Morris, IL -Five racing divisions strapped in for a night full of exciting racing at the Grundy County Speedway this past Saturday, for week two of the D’Arcy GMC STARS (Short Track Auto Racing Series) season. In addition to the National Midgets, Classic Modified Dwarf Cars, INEX Legends, and the Mini-Cup cars, the Illini Racing Series midgets were back for the first time in seven years on a Saturday. The Illini Racing Series made everyone aware of their return with an outstanding feature race. This was all part of the Baseball at the Track theme in which one lucky fan left with tickets to the Cubs/Sox series. STARS also rolled out the red carpet for the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters organization treating them to many track related activities and helping them raise funds for their cause.

Brad Greenup of Channahon, IL captured his first career D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget victory in a comeback fashion. Starting on the pole, Brad fell back to second early and trailed by nearly a straightaway to Patrick Wilda Jr. for most of the race. Greenup then began to reel Wilda back in, in his 100.7 RXQ/Little Caesar’s Pizza/Beast/Mopar and at lap 23 of 30 caught Wilda and passed for the lead. While being passed, Wilda spun out and was sent to the tail of the field, but was able to drive his way back up to a third place finish. Trailing Greenup at the checkers was last week’s winner Jimmy Anderson, Wilda, Mike Wallace and Paul Ballinger. The Jimmy John’s “Freaky Fast” Fast Qualifier went to Billy Hulbert. Wilda was the Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash winner and race winners included Anderson and Minooka’s Terry Ahern.

In the Illini Racing Series return to Saturday Nights at Grundy, Lamont Critchett won a nail-biter. The top 3 IRS cars finished within 3 car lengths of Critchett and the mid pack looked the same. With the IRS return to Grundy, STARS honored multi-time Illini Champion Susan Spencer before the nights festivities began. Aaron Willis was the winner of the Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash.

The STARS Classic Modified feature once again went to Joliet’s Mike Anderson who started on the pole and never looked back. Anderson drove his Merlin Muffler/Kawasaki/Madden to his second straight STARS Classic Modified feature. Anderson beat the Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast Qualifier, George Pershey to the line by a commanding three seconds. Jon McGeorge, Ed Ensor and Rick Basalone rounded out the top 5. The Hot Rod Barn Trophy Dash winner Eric Pershey did not compete in the feature after hard contact with the turn one wall in the heat race, ending his night. The Classic Modified heat winner was Jon McGeorge from Seneca, IL.

The Town & Country Lanes Legends Series saw a new winner this week with Tommy Jones taking the checkered flag first. Jones was two seconds ahead of second place finisher Kyle Bradley. Daniel Ivaska, Brian Tedeschi, and Rachael Pinkerman were the top five. Andy Jones took home the Trophy Dash bonus, the heat race and was also the fastest qualifier for the division.

In Mini-Cup action, Jarett James passed Austin Kunert on lap 9 and led the remaining laps en route to his feature victory. James beat out Erica Ensor, Kunert, Jordan Caskey and Mike Harrold for the win. Erica Ensor was the fastest qualifier for the evening and won the heat race followed by Jaret James and Austin Kunert.

D’Arcy GMC STARS racing will again be at the Grundy County Speedway this Saturday June 25 for the Carter/Anderson Classic presented by Freaksters Roadhouse.
