Procon pump set-up

We're ready to fire up our winter project & have fitted a seemingly unused Procon pump as used on the SESCOs of yore. We have oil pressure & spark & fuel to the pump but the pump output is weak. Do these pumps need modifications from "stock" to work in a midget application? A different relief spring or relief valve setting?

Thanks,

I assume you have a Hilborn, or some form of fuel Injection, haven't heard of that brand of pump, and also assume it is a mechanical, rather than electric. Manual pumps typically don't have much pumping power, especially at cranking speed, or being pushed slowly, so that may not be uncommon, as soon as it picks up speed, and gets all the air out of the system, it should at least provide enough volume and pressure to begin a tuning proceedure. While pushing, or cranking if you have a starter, just make sure the throttle is wide open, that allows fuel to fill everything, and of course, if it starts, be ready to get off the pedal. Fuel injection is rather simple, once you understand how it works, and keep all supply lines to the pump, as low as you can, the pump will put out a lot of pressure, but doesn't have much on the vacuum side. Good luck! Bob

Just for grin's, I googled ProCon pumps, and they do indeed make pumps for fuel injection, both in rotary vane, and gear models. I'd start by setting the hi-speed bypass at 50#, and the idle bypass at 22#, and make sure your barrel valve is turning the right direction, set the barrel valve at 8%, and I usually either take the plug out of it, or take off the fuel lines, and set the shutters, throttle plates, on some .002 feeler stock. That should get it running, and you can tune from there. Bob
