Brad Sweet picks up hard fought win at Waynesfield
June 23, 2010
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio
After 5 straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State, 36 of the cars and stars of the O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions found themselves at “the best kept secret in dirt track racing”, Waynesfield Raceway Park, just outside the small town of Waynesfield, Ohio. Brad Sweet from Grass Valley, California found the track to his liking, picking up the A Main victory as Ohio Logistics presented leg 6 of the 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek.
At the drop of the green flag in the 40 lap A Main, there was immediate action as 11b-Brock Mayes, 17-Tyler Walker, v92 Matthew Reed, w20-Greg Wilson, 78-Todd Kane, and 12-Jared Ridge were all involved in a wild accident entering turn 1 that saw the night end for Mayes, Walker, and Reed. Wilson, Kane, and Ridge were able to rejoin the field for a complete restart as no laps were completed. Before the green could be thrown, the Northwest Ohio Towing and Recovery #97 of Dean Jacobs came to a stop with a broken torsion arm, which would end the Wooster, Ohio native's evening. As the green flag fell on the restart, “The Texan” Gary Wright would jump out to the early race lead in his Lubbock Wrecker Service, Richwood Construction #9x. Wright would be closely followed by #49 Brad Sweet, and #55 Dave Blaney through the first 10 laps. On lap 11, Gary wright hopped the cushion in turn 2, going just over the edge of the racing surface just long enough for both Sweet and Blaney to get by. On lap 15, the “Buckeye Bullet” Dave Blaney powered by Brad Sweet to take the lead in the LRJ Enterprises, Century 21 Motorsports #55. Caution would fly on lap 17 as Craig Mintz looped out the UPS Store, Bobby's Truck and Auto Repair #20x in turn 2. Mintz would rejoin the field from the tail. As action resumed, the top 3 remained the same with Dave Blaney out front, Brad Sweet 2nd, and Gary Wright 3in 3rd until lap 23 when the #55 of Blaney got a little too high in turn 2 and hopped over the cushion, handing the lead back to Sweet. Wright would also get by, relegating Blaney back to 3rd. Action was halted again on lap 27 as the #04 of Cap Henry spun in turn 4, right front of the leaders, nearly collecting the #55 of Blaney. Blaney was able to make it by with no contact, and Henry was able to rejoin the field from the tail. On the restart, Dave Blaney made a power move to grab second from Gary Wright down the back stretch and entering turn 3. Then just after completing lap 28, the red flag would fly as the #3c of Vienna, West Virgina's Cale Conley got upside down at the end of the front stretch. Conley would walk away from the accident, but his night would end with a 16th place finish. When racing resumed, the top 3 again began to dice between themselves. The #55 of Dave Blaney found himself back to 3rd on lap 30 as Gary Wright powered by on the backstretch. After the feature, Blaney's crew would find the right rear was losing air, which caused “The Buckeye Bullet” to fall into the clutches of his brother Dale, aboard the TI22 Performance, George Fisher #2, who passed the #55 in the final laps to finish 3rd. In the end it was Sweet picking up the checkers, with Wright second, Dale Blaney third, Dave Blaney fourth, and the CH Motorsports #83 of Tim Shaffer rounding out the Top 5.
In victory lane, Brad Sweet had nothing but praise for the drivers with the All Stars saying “These guys are some of the best in the business. To get a win against them really means something.” Brad picked up $5000 for his victory aboard the Kasey Kahne Racing, Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts, Ollies Bargain Outlet #49.
#89g David Gravel celebrated his 18th birthday by setting quick time. Heat races were won by #78 Todd Kane, #9x Gary Wright, #8h Brian Paulus, and #97 Dean Jacobs. The Rubbin Racin Dash was won by #83 Tim Shaffer and the University of Northwestern Ohio B Main was won by #0 Brandon Wimmer
The 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek moves on to Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH on Thursday night June 24th, Limaland Motorsports Park in Allentown, Ohio on Friday June 25th, and wrapping up on Saturday night June 26 at Fremont Raceway in Fremont Ohio for the $10,000 to win Speedweek finale.
When the green flag dropped on the JR and Sons Service Center Compacts, the front 6 starters stayed bunched together until the #31 driven by “The Jet” Jeff Kimes took off from his fifth starting spot and grabbed the lead on lap 2. Meanwhile Chris Parker in the #77 found himself doing battle with Team Durflinger as the #17 of Justin Durflinger, and the team car the #7 driven by Ethan Pope battled hard with Parker until getting by, only to battle each other for second, allowing Kimes to get away. In the end it was #31 Jeff Kimes pick up the victory, with Durflinger 2nd, Pope 3rd, Parker 4th and #82 Harvey Yoder coming home fifth.
