Anderson, IN - May 17, 2010 - Former Beaver Dam (WI) Raceway owner and builder, Gary Schlafer, has successfully gained his auctioneer license and recently announced his intentions to return to the sport in a new capacity in the coming months.
Schlafer who in 1993 opened the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI. is no stranger to the sport of auto racing particularly in the state of Wisconsin. He is also a former driver who enjoyed success in Wisconsin open wheel racing in the mid 1970's. During his tenure as a driver he scored multiple feature wins and held the world record for a 1/4 mile speedway after he toured Slinger,WI Speedway at 11.76 seconds in 1975.
In the late 1970's Schlafer relocated to Anderson, IN to pursue business ventures. Schlafer reduced his racing schedule during this time to a handful of USAC events and the annual Little 500. Schlafer scored a third place finish in the Little 500 in 1 concluded Schlafer. Schlafer has indicated that there will be a huge announcement regarding his current project in the coming weeks.986 before retiring as a driver in 1990. Schlafer, a former engineer, is credited with designing and building pavement sprint cars that were far superior to other cars at the time.
Schlafer found his true niche in the sport as a promoter once he opened the Beaver Dam Raceway in 1993. He produced 150 motorsport contests with over 2000 racing events with no serious injuries or fatalities in over six seasons. Motorsport events Schlafer produced were sanctioned by: USAC, WoO, BADGER, IRA, ASCoC, UMP, HAV-A-TAMPA, CORR, and also produced the US Monster Truck Showdown and many Badgerland Triple Crown events. Schlafer is also responsible for creating the existing formula for the MSA sprint car series. The Wisconsin based MSA is arguably one of the most successful sprint car clubs in the country today. Schlafer sold the Beaver Dam Raceway in 1999 and has been idle in the sport since the sale.
Schlafer recently acknowledged his intentions to create an exposition / trade show with his newly acquired auctioneer license." My family has been involved in motorsport our whole lives. Family members are active in racing currently in Wisconsin. I was wanting to do something I haven't done yet " explains Schlafer." I've always wanted to be an auctioneer and now that I have my license I want to put it to use within the racing community. I'm working with my wife, Connie, and a good friend on something big that is going to be fun and create a buzz in the racing community. I'm looking forward to seeing a few old friends now that I'm going to be around racing again and trying something different"
