Art Peacock at the Southern Illinois Center in DuQuoin, Illinois for the POWRi midget and micro mini sprint races on 19 January 2008.

I first met 1960's car owner Art Peacock at Belle Clair Speedway, Illinois in 2007 at a POWRi midget show. We talked for quite a while about the racing days from the 1960's. As we chatted, I told him I was from Oswego, NY back in the 1960's and mentioned some of the drivers whom raced at Oswego Speedway. Art is from Illinois, and we chatted about his sprint car ownership days and some of the drivers who piloted his race cars. Well, I bought a copy of Art's book and, while reading it I compiled a list of some of the drivers that piloted his race cars, and was amazed at the fact that some of these drivers also raced at Oswego Speedway, NY. So, I took my compiled list of drivers from the book and made this my first entry for 2008. Indeed, all racing legends from the 1960's.

1960 - Steve Orme, Glen Leisure, Johnny White, Bob Waters, Bob Coons, Bob Hewitt, Roy Shields, Dick Raiza, Hal Schroeder, Johnny Rutherford, Gordon Wooley (and 1963 also), Kenny Wines, Ardell Young, Jay Woodside (and in 1961 also).

1961 - Don Friend, Jimmy Murphy ( and 1962 also)

1962 - Thad Dosher, Howard Gardner, Dick Akins

1963 - Warren Scheibe, Patrick O'Reilly, Harry Ross, Al Murie, Tom York

1964 - Chuck Hulse, Earl Falkenberg

Hi Rich,

Unless something has changed over the winter, I fully expect to see Art in Florida in a couple of weeks. I started going down in 2004 and I believe he has been there every year since. It seems like I see him everywhere. I believe the last time last year was at Gas City. I don't remember how many races he got to last year, but I think it was well over 60 the year before.

Great guy. Anyone who sees him sitting around the track selling his book should stop and talk to him and buy a book. I'll post if I see him in Florida.
