With the winter coming on, can anybody suggest some good racing-related reading? I read Lone Wolf last year and really enjoyed it. I'm about done with Crime & Punishment, and I want something with some horsepower to go to next.

Anything by Dave Argabright, if you can find it....

The Knoxville Sprint Car Hall of Fame has a large collection of books for sale, so maybe check them out.....

Right now eBay has a copy of Joe Scalzo's "Stand on the Gas" from 1974 listed with no bids. Great sprint car book!

Everything you ever wanted to read: http://coastal181.com/. I have no connection (except friendship), but I've bought a lot of books from them.

Jordan,
Here are a few from my bookshelf that I've enjoyed again and again:
Do you like Biographies?

"Gentlemen,Start Your Engines" by Wilbur Shaw
Pub.Coward-McCann 1955

"A.J." by A.J. Foyt with William Neely
Pub.Times Books 1983

"Whats It Like Out There?" by Mario Andretti with Bob Collins
Pub.Henry Regnery 1970

Do you like History?

"Vintage & Historic Indianapolis Race Cars" by Dan Owen
Pub.MBI Publishing 1998

"Ford:The Dust And The Glory.A Racing History" by Leo Levine
Pub.Macmillan Co. 1968

Several of these books are out of print. Lucky for me, I do my shopping at used book stores, swap meets and garage sales. And,don't forget about your local Public library.I've always found them to be eager to help in the search for a hard to find book.

Not merely a racing book but Pat Sullivan's book about Joie Ray should be checked out. It covers society/culture in Louisville when Joie grew up, as well as his racing exploits.

I recommend the following:

1. "The First Fifty Years Oswego Speedway" by George Caruso, Jr.

2. "50 Years: Oswego Speedway International Classic" by George Caruso, Jr. with Carol Haynes

3. "Southern Supermodifieds And Other Early Racers" By Gerald Hodges/The Racing Reporter - Volume One

4. Syracuse Scrapbook - "50 Years of Stock Car Racing on Labor Day" by Gary Spaid and Bob Hunter

Have a good day...see you at the races

Brad Doty's book is VERY good....I can't remember the exact title but Dave Argabright was the co-author. And of course, Dave's book co-written w/ Economaki is a good one as well..."Let 'em all go"

One of the best sprint car books ever!

I first read it in 1974; I've re-read it dozens of times since. I even purchased a reprint in the early 90's and read it again!

One story I'll always remember from the book is the story of "the malevolent beast", a sprint car that either killed or injured several drivers.....
