Q, Non Wing Sprint Car Racing was just as exciting at 500hp as it is at 900hp.

A-1 YES

A-2 NO

Why?

No.

Two reasons:

1. You can't unsee what you've seen.

2. Technology. When all Sprint Cars only had 500hp they were also on stone age shocks and tires. Now when you put 500hp in them they roll around like they're on pavement.

I agree with less tire. (In every series)

I say yes, It was as good as if not better than to days racing and the cars weren't so locked down. A perfect lap was almost not achievable with thinner tires and new style shocks. Now they can rip em off consecutively.

I believe it was 1988 when I seen the first guy flat foot the old burg non winged. That was Andy Hilelnberg of IND in Hoffmans sprinter. Two weeks later Staab did it. Yeah there were some big motors back then but most was done in their own shop. Still tops was about 700hp.

Somewhere in the early 90s was a group of throwback sprints. someone brought a grant king and he was pulling the wheels and the left front was three feet in the air thru the turns. was hella fun to watch.

Two things wing cars need

Require a 1" wickerbill on the underside of the top wing should reduce downforce and create a smaller hole in the air.

Have a maximum wing angle rule. Say a 20 degree maximum angle of attack. Anything above that degree is an airdam not a wing anyway. At 20 degrees the wing would have max downforce but leave a smaller downwash or "dirty" air as some call it.

The UMSS series that has a 20° maximum wing angle rule. I've heard the fastest cars are running less than max angle.

Their engines are in the 500hp range so that factors into the whole equation.

Not a wing fan but, The east coast Sportsman class
With only a small top wing
promotes great racing action.

Less tire but also more choices. Hoosier has the monopoly on dirt racing these days. Where are the Goodyears, McCrearys, American Racer and such of old days?

I'm trying to do this from memory so don't scold me, but back in the day, to increase the sprint car count, Bloomington removed fi from the engine, and allowed only 4 bbl carbs, talk about instant failure, if it hadn't been so dangerous, it would have been laughable!
