(Old story, I know, but) Ironic many SC&M winners - pavement & dirt - could hardly even apply for a license to even enter the Indy 500 anymore; & the first 2 wall hits of the "month" (on the oval) were from an F1 legend and a near F1 candidate (who both ARE very qualified to run any type of car / proven winners - they ARE talented). They will recover & be fast, but I'm sure there were plenty talking last year when front engine guys have had issues there...thats how it goes tho...
'"Special" Ed (the only Salem sprinter car winner & Hulman 100 polesitter in the field!) was 3rd fastest ystrdy & 10th today...could be drafting too tho...(but it's cool & he can run a limited sched & keep coming back there & being fast! Year after year!)

Of all the drivers entered to compete in this years' Indy 500 Ed Carpenter is by far the guy we'd most enjoy watching win it.
Several reasons. Not the least of which are that we had the honor of watching Ed strap his ass into a USAC Silver Crown car at Du Quoin, Springfield and the Indiana State Fairgrounds dirt tracks. Showed up in Tulsa a couple of times and gave The Chili Bowl Nationals a try and drove a midget at the scary fast joints of Salem and Winchester. Second: by all accounts EC is a good guy. We were very disappointed when EC got crossed up with Hinchcliffe in turn #1 back in 2014 at The Speedway. You could see that whole deal materializing down the front straight. I think Bell was in on that deal, too, but IIRC he came through unscathed.

Another rear-engine "specialist" destroys one today...
https://racer.com/2019/05/16/oward-u...ractice-crash/ But all that matters is who finds the $ tho, I know...Oward won the IndyLights champ last year. = a scholarship $. Lets hope Jarrett Andretti & Windom run good next Friday & can go for it in 2020...

Maybe, just maybe, some of the Indy Car drivers can drive? Last NASCAR guy ended up in the fence, multiple F1 champ in the fence along with his F1 companion, last years Lites champion, and the last 2 USAC champs sent that way have 4 wall contacts in 2 races! Just facts!
