Was saddened to learn that one of the greatest of the straight line sport, Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, passed away on March 28, 2012 at age 81. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
RIP, Grumpy

God Speed, old friend, used to watch Grumpy at US 30 Dragway, back in the early 60's, in York, Pa, when I was in the Army, bought a lot of parts from his main sponsor. Great to have known this man! Bob

Heard an interesting story about Grumpy a while ago. I can't say if it's true, but I'd like to think it is. It seems that he noticed that when the NHRA would blow check an engine, they'd always use the same cylinder. So,on his engines, that cylinder was 100% legal. The other seven were in another dimension entirely!! It allegedly took them years to figure that one out! God speed,Grumpy!

I had the pleasure of spending some time in Grumpy's shop, back in my Army days in DC, and he had quite an impressive number of horsepower makers, he was running the big W block when I was there, and before I went, I had owned a new 1959, with the tri-power W, and a 1960, also new, with the same number of carbs, just more Hp, and when we went to York, Pa the first time, I couldn't believe how fast that thing was, the earth shook, just like it used to at Salem, when the Super's ran there. Quite a man of his time. RIP!

I'll never forget him in that little Chevy of his blowing all the Hemi's away at the Indy Nats in 65 or 66? A true icon. RIP Grumpy.
