I was just curious as to Darren Clayton being called the Modern Day Cowboy. A late model driver, John Gill has had the Nickname Modern Day Cowboy for many years maybe even before Darren was born. Every time i hear Modern Day Cowboy i think of John Gill. I guess we have 2 now.....LOL

I have known John for a long time. I am about 10 miles from Mitchell. John is the Modern Day Cowboy, has been for years.

Nope Daron Clayton will always be the ONLY Modern Day Cowboy

John Gill was known as the Modern Day Cowboy long before Darren Clayton was even heard of.
Nothing against Darren but John holds that that Nickname.

I know i will be corrected if I'm wrong but I believe in the open wheel world the term "Cowboy" was commonly used back in the day by car owners to describe the drivers that were maybe a little on the "win it or wear it" side. I believe the term was used mostly before cages or just after or both. SC&M did a bit on it a while back by I think John Sawyer titled the "Cowboys". Some older drivers among Clayton and Tony Jones were compared by style. I know everytme this comes up it rolls back to John Gill but I think the two nicknames while the same are much different in meaning.

John Gill is the real Modern Day Cowboy. Somebody who had no clue who John was prolly started calling Clayton that. I guess there is nothing wrong with two MDC's since they are in two totally different classes. But if there could only be one then it would be Mitchell, Indiana's "Modern Day Cowboy" John Gill!

I think the term originated with the rock band Tesla and their song by the same name. So, I don't think John Gill can lay sole claim to it, either. It is a cool driver nickname, no matter what genre of racing they're from.
