Action-Packed Season on Tap for the UMRA

By Alex Wollf

On Saturday May 2, 2009 the United Midget Racing Association will begin its 49th season of three-quarter midget racing action at the Brownstown Speedway on the grounds of the Jackson County Fairgrounds. The race at the southeastern Indiana speedplant will be the first of twenty exciting stops throughout the Hoosier state on the 2009 UMRA slate. Next up will be a stop at the Decatur County Fairgrounds in Greensburg on May 16 for the first of three shootouts in the tree city. The month of May ends with a Friday night tussle at the famed Gas City I-69 Speedway on May 29.

The second month of the UMRA season begins on June 6 with the first of five stops at the venerable Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville. From there the 2009 UMRA Pavement season will start with the first of four stops at Mount Lawn Speedway in New Castle on June 13. One week later on June 20 the TQ's will tackle the high banks of the Anderson Speedway where Terry Goff will without a doubt be the driver to beat following his sweep of the Anderson races in 2008. After that it will be back to Rushville on June 26 and 27 during the Rush County Fair and a pair of holiday weekend showdowns on July 3 and 4. The 2008 races at Rushville saw Bobby Walton, Patrick Wolf, and Zach Cougill get their first career UMRA feature victories in the three races at the Rush County Fairgrounds. July 10 and 11 will be another great weekend of action as the UMRA will hit the red clay of the Bloomington Speedway on Friday night and then head back to Greensburg on Saturday night. Friday July 17 will see the TQ's going back to Gas City for the second time in 2009. In 2008 Terry Goff passed Tate Martz coming to the white flag in the July Gas City stop en route to his 101st career UMRA victory.

Drivers and teams will be looking to start their final pushes for the 2009 UMRA Championship as they head to the Kokomo Speedway on Sunday night August 2. Last year at Kokomo, Brent Turner took the checkered flag for the second time in 2008 in impressive fashion. On August 15 its back to the blacktop at Mount Lawn as the pavement series continues. August 22 sees the lone 2009 appearance of the UMRA at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon. The 2008 season had three stops at Twin Cities that included Scott Petry heading to victory lane, Brent Turner taking his maiden voyage to winners circle, and two-time series champion Ron Combs taking his third win of the season. Who knows what will happen in 2009 when the UMRA hits the high banks in pursuit of victory. The month of August comes to a close with an exciting pavement twinbill. On Saturday August 29 the UMRA again tackles the tricky third-mile Mount Lawn Speedway. Then, on Sunday August 30, the series returns to the tight confines of the Indianapolis Speedrome where the drivers will attempt to break the track record of 12.803 seconds set by Terry Goff on June 7, 2001. The race will be a part of Rumble Series promoter Tony Barnhorst's four-race "Sunday Afternoon Stimulus" series at the Speedrome.

On September 12 the TQ's go to Greensburg again as the cars and stars of the UMRA will look to keep Jason Vest from going back-to-back in September races at the Decatur County Fairgrounds. The 2009 UMRA season will come to an end with a 50-lap tussle at the Mount Lawn Speedway on September 18. In 2008 Brent Turner came out of an exciting early race scrap on top as he took the third victory of a great rookie campaign.

Several questions are on the minds of UMRA fans as the 2009 season gets ready to begin. Will Brent Turner experience a sophomore jinx after a first season that saw three wins and a third place points finish? Will Patrick Wolf have another great season to follow up a 2008 runner-up points finish? Will Robbie Roland continue his rise up the UMRA standings after an impressive end to the season which resulted 2007 Rookie of the Year finishing eighth in the final points standings? And perhaps most importantly, will anyone be able to unseat Terry Goff from his throne as King of the TQ's after his record breaking 13th UMRA title in 2008?

The answers to these questions and more will start to be revealed on May 2 at Brownstown Speedway and you'll have to be there to find out!

Does anyone know if UMRA is going to have an entry fee at each race or did they do away with that for good?
