A bit unusual, but interesting. The July-August 2014 issue of Smithsonian magazine has a great article on late car owner and artist Salvatore (Sal) Scarpitta. According to the article he built art cars using a lacquered paper style. Among his "art" cars are the "Sal Cragar", "Rajo Jack" and "Sal Gambler Special". The text of the article by Jeff MacGregor does a great job of vividly describing the unique appeal of Sprint Car Racing. Nice to see our sport described in positive terms in something with such a diverse readership as the Smithsonian. Title of the article is "Boy Meets Grille".

Nice photography, excellent writing. I recommend this article to everyone. I think it captures the very essence of sprint car racing.

Sal sponsored the Sprint Car that Jim Seigel race in Central PA for years. He also did a racing move about Sprint Car racing.

"Auto racing began the day they built the second car..."

Loved it! I'm sure I'll direct newbies and unknowns to this article often.
