NIGHT ONE ‘TWAS THE MIDGETS BEFORE CHRISTMAS Dec. 19---Kemper Arena
O’REILLY POWRi NATIONAL MIDGET SERIES

“Coons tops Kemper midget field”

By Bryan Gapinski
Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 19---Jerry Coons Jr. maneuvered through the field to capture the 40-lap ‘Twas the Midgets before Christmas feature, at Kemper Arena. Curfew regulations imposed by the City of Kansas City on Friday night forced the event to be run Saturday morning.
Dave Darland jumped into the lead at the start leading the opening five circuits around the 1/10-mile dirt oval. Darland slowed entering turn 3 on lap 5 and collected the second, third and fourth place running cars of Cory Kruseman, Brad Loyet and J. J. Yeley.
Billy Pauch assumed the lead on the restart followed by Matt Fox and Coons who started in 14th position. Nine cautions over the next fourteen laps for various on track incidents kept the field closely bunched. Pauch led Coons and Bryan Clauson at the midway three- car lengths separated the trio when the events final caution appeared on lap 24.
Pauch then held off the repeated challenges of Coons. Coons pulled at the start/finish line on lap 30 and took the lead on the backstretch, as Clauson followed into second place. Clauson made several attempts to pass for the lead over the final nine laps but trailed Coons by a car length at the finish.
Coons driving the Wilke-PAK Motorsports/Spike/Toyota collected $5,000 for the victory finishing ahead of Clauson, Pauch, Dereck King and Eddie Martin. A total of 82 cars participated in the first night, of the two-day event which featured sixteen preliminary races leading to the feature event.
