It wouldn't be me if i didn't comment on The Burg.
Dad started taking me there in the early seventies. I was five or six playing with hotwheels half the time but i distinctly remember the Wilkerson-Gaines-Millburn-Krebs-Beavers and many others battling at that time they qualified two laps with the second car pushing off after the first had completed their first lap.
They started the fast cars at the rear and if someone ran a second faster in the feature than they quailified they were disqualified. This kept people from purposfully qualifying bad for a better starting possition. This told to me by since deceased IMZIE who as a track official-scorer-flagman in those days.
The old track was always exciting like that. Watching the greats work their way to a win instead of cruising. Certainly we all heard of Gaines cruises but usually they came after he past ten or twelve cars.
The old track could at times put on one hell of a show Kelly kinser running inside and Pup and others running the rim often swapping the lead several times a lap.
I won't knock that. I will say that when the track was slick it was one of the most boring places to watch sprint cars run that Id ever seen. I often mentioned go karts could run it faster like that and that woudln't be a lie. Hell Shortbus could pleddal his bike faster. I mean this in no disrespect to the drivers. No matter what they worked just as hard and were in every bit as much danger racing like that. I just found it extremely boring.
The new Burg? Im gonna say the Jury's still out. While I personally love the facility (One of the best in the nation IMHO) I've seen everything from stellar three wide battles for mulitple laps to follow the leader and absolutely no passing.
What Im saying is that so far I believe its sometimes the best racing I've ever seen and sometimes not so great. The Dickie last to first consi at the Gaines classic was equivalent to Kinser Knoxville last to first runs Oh BTW thats in one lap!
The last Race I seen there two weeks ago saw Peterman run down a hooked up Gullick and pass him running right on the wall. Gullick then adjusted his lines and then diamonded 1/2 and got the lead back and peterman ran him down again but his loose car got in the way.
I think the best is yet to come. Even the vets have to learn new lines ect to make it work for them. What I see on this new track though is those willing to put it on the edge will go to the front if they can sustain it.
Example. Night one ISW. AWESOME! Night Two??.................. Good but not much passing action.
As for car counts, How many tracks are going to pile on saturday nights? I also think some rules might be a issue in teams traveling here but I'll leave that between the teams and promotor. (Tire rule which I was against and still am when theres no competition allowed) Leaving track policy.
Its a awesome facility and awesome racing IMHO. The thing that surprised me the most this year that even the night I went when the track got blacker than asphault it was still twice as fast and three wide in the feature.
Chuck, rambling again
