I do believe a team member type of relationship can start at a track but it might be difficult because the pits are a busy place. I've been turned down by car owners that I wanted to help on race day, they are busy there isn't much time to teach newbies what is going on. I think that if you start off helping a team in their shop it's a more comfortable learning environment and they will have more confidence in you when you go to the track together. My 2 cents.
It's a pretty rare guy who can just show up at the track and be of much real use. Normally that guy's a crew chief type or a shock specialist. Teams are looking for him, not him looking for a team.
