70th Racing Season Continues Saturday Night at Lawrenceburg Speedway with the Dick Gaines Memorial
The Lawrenceburg Speedway continues its yearlong 70th Anniversary Season on Saturday night with the “Dick Gaines Memorial.” The 17th running of the race honoring one of Indiana’s greatest racing heroes will offer a $3,000 payday to the winner of the Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint feature.
A lot has changed at the Lawrenceburg, Ind., track in seventy seasons, the most recent being the reconfiguration from a bowl-shaped quarter-mile bullring to a new high banked 3/8ths mile palace of speed.
The new larger track made its debut on June 14, 2008, with Jon Stanbrough christening victory lane. There have been 706 features run on the 3/8ths mile with 246 winning drivers. Sprints, modifieds, pure stocks, hornets, mini sprints, three-quarter midgets, late models, winged sprints, bombers, crate late models, legend cars, street stocks, cruisers, and even school buses have competed.
There have been 177 sprint features with forty-nine different winners. 2013 Lawrenceburg Speedway Champion CJ Leary and Justin Grant are the winningest sprint drivers with a dozen feature wins each.
Brady Short sits third with eleven feature wins, all coming within the first 59 sprint races, and Thomas Meseraull and Kevin Thomas, Jr. are tied for fourth with nine wins apiece.
Robert Ballou, Nick Bilbee and Dave Darland each have eight wins, followed by 2014 Lawrenceburg Speedway Champion Shawn Westerfeld with seven, and Coleman Gulick and Hunter Schuerenberg with six.
