ROA REMEMBERS LAST YEAR’S GRINDING OVAL NATIONALS CRASH!
(Perris, CA, November 2, 2015) For Garden Grove, California’s rising sprint car star Brody Roa, October and November of 2014 was set to be the time of his life. He got married on October 24th to his wife Taylor and spent some time on a relaxing honeymoon in Hawaii. The newlyweds flew back home four days before the Oval Nationals, but soon thereafter, their lives were turned upside down when Roa endured a grinding crash at the annual Oval Nationals practice. It not only put him in the hospital, but it knocked him out of action until after the new year.
Fast forward the clock to the upcoming 20th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented by All-Coast Construction at Perris Auto Speedway on November 12th, 13th and 14th. The hot driving Roa is completely healed and ready for the rumble he missed in 2014.
Like many of the teams who contest the biggest traditional sprint car race in the world at The PAS every fall, Roa was testing his car at the Wednesday practice session when disaster struck. He flipped violently in turn one and plowed into the crashwall. The track safety crew was immediately at the scene of the wreck where it was quite clear that he was in trouble with multiple injuries including a frightening, initial loss of eye sight. Fortunately the eye sight returned as he was leaving the track in the ambulance, but his other substantial injuries kept him in the hospital and out of a racecar.
“We came back from our honeymoon in Hawaii and loaded up the car to come here to Perris to run the Oval Nationals practice,” the 24-year-old racer said. “We ran a couple sessions and did not feel like we had the speed we really needed so we were going to run just one more session, of course. I got down in turn one and I do not remember what happened from there on.”
What happened was a punctured & collapsed lung, concussion and he busted his knees open on the crossbar for the steering and had to have staples inserted to put them back together. He also spent a couple nights in the hospital. Many people would be pretty upset and deterred by the injuries, but one has to remember, Roa was born into a racing family. He was more than willing to shake them off.
“Those injuries were about it so when I got home from the hospital on Friday I knew I shouldn’t have asked the question so I didn’t, but I thought about getting the car back together for Saturday,” he laughed. “I knew that was not going to happen, but we came out and watched from the grandstands on Saturday night. I don’t remember much of it, but I remember being here.”
Wanting to race on the Saturday was a natural for Roa as his family has been around the original CRA, SCRA and now USAC/CRA Series’ for decades. His father Brett raced with CRA in the 1980’s and he picked it up from his uncle and cousin Tom Roa Sr. & Jr. who were fixtures in the So. Cal. CRA Sprint Car wars in the 1970’s.
“My dad stopped racing himself a little before he married my mom,” Roa said. “He was then a crew chief for Rip Williams for a little while and then Mike Kirby until I started racing. I used to hang out in the pits here (Perris Auto Speedway) when I was just a little kid and those are some of my fondest memories.”
Roa has had success throughout his racing career. He raced pavement road racing go-karts for four years winning a “decent amount” of main events and four championships. He then won a Focus Midget dirt championship in 2009. In 2010, he raced a sprint car for the first time and claimed the “Rookie of the Year” award at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway. He ran some USAC 360 races in 2011 and made a few appearances in the USAC/CRA series competing against the 410’s. In 2012, the family team made the leap and jumped into 410 sprint car racing where they have been a main stay ever since.
In addition to racing sprint cars, Roa also occasionally jumps back into a go-kart and races on the dirt with to the So Cal Oval Karters. Away from the track he works on a F2000 team (formula open wheel car) in Whittier, California where they have five cars to keep him busy. Also, as of three months ago, he is helping his wife Tailor who decided she wanted to race karts as well.
“We are kind of letting her down here on the engine deal,” Roa shrugged on a day when Tailor’s kart blew an engine. “It is a 4-cycle and we don’t know a lot about them. She was running in second in both her heat races today (last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway) and the engine blew up on her. She is doing real good. This is only her third race. At her first race she finished fourth in the main just jumping into the go-kart have never driven anything before besides her Mazda on the street. I am proud of her. She is a wheel lady and she is going to get it.”
Heading into next week’s Oval Nationals, Roa, who seems to get off to a slow start each season, is coming off of a second and a third place finish two weeks ago at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona. He has not finished out of the top five in the last five races and has climbed all the way to sixth in the championship standings and is only 32-points out of fourth.
