That yellow car was a rocket ship. He could have passed whomever and whenever he wanted to. I guess he chose to make his move as soon as possible. If the tire marked the entrance to the turn he might have been charging just a little (10 feet). Had his nose had been up even to the other cars driver at that tire the other driver should have given him racing room and he did so, however the other driver appeared to get just a little aggressive after he had been cleared.
At these speeds we can't get too precise as we don't have stop action video available to the racers in real time. All in all It looked like a heck of a good pass to me. Patience is a commodity not to prevalent in short track racing as racers see them selves being short on time to make their moves, however watching an old pro race they very often use their patience to their advantage.
