watching that gave me goose bumps! However, I've been going to pole day/weekend since 1964 (race too) and by 1995 the crowds had gone from a peak of 150,000+ down to aproximately 50,000. I remember the race day like traffic jams on pole day from the mid-60's through the mid 80's. In 1988 I took my son (7years old) up on pole day for his first time. We went down Crawfordsville Rd, up Georgetown to 24th and parked in a yard on 24th St without hardly slowing down. We drove right up to the place. That was the first year that I noticed the crowds dropping off somewhat. It was still a great crowd but, noticably down from the years before. In spite of what Robin Miller says about the glory days of 1995, things were beginning to decline by then. 1995 saw only 44 entries and less than 40 car/driver combinations and, the qualifying crowds were thinning out.
