I think both of the races you mentioned are considered "events". Races like these bring owners and their cars out that a "normal" show won't. Some of the cars are specialty type cars that we only see at these events.
One of the things that Kevin Miller of USAC mentioned when he was hired was that they needed more "events". I was pleased to see that they have the Smackdown coming to Kokomo this year for the sprint cars. This should be a great three days of racing. Tri City in Illinois has the end of the year midget show that also would be classified as an event.
As far as the Little 500 is concerned, a number of the cars come from Florida and Michigan. They also have some of the winged warriors from TBARA, AVSS, HOSS and Extreme take off the wings and participate as well. As USAC found out, a regular show won't entice these folks to travel to Indiana to participate. Pavement sprint car racing right now is mostly winged racing.
