The maintenance is not more involved but would be more frequent, any four cylinder has harmonic problems, they will try and shake themselves apart. The small block Chevy has been around a while (almost 60 yrs now). You can build a dependable motor either way but generally have to turn the four harder and more rpm’s wears motors our faster. You can build a 800 horse 410 that that will run 30 races before it needs rings/bearings/springs if you keep it 7800-7900 rpm.
Depending on your location talk to motor guys that build both and do it on budgets, I’d suggest guys like Bill Frampton and Dick Kercher here in Indiana.
