Last night, track conditions were pretty challenging, come feature time. It slicked off really bad and made passing not easy, at all. Tonight totally made up for that, though. I arrived early and walked in to take a look at the racing surface. It still had a lot of moisture on it and had obviously received a lot of attention since we all had left the night before. Hot laps were very fast. The heats were fast and competitive. The B-Mains, especially the battles for the final transfer spot in each of the Midget ones gave everybody a dose of what we were in for, come feature time.
The Midget feature quickly lapsed into total chaos, from the second the green dropped. Coons jumped out to a quick lead and started to pull away. Meanwhile, battles were breaking out all over the place. Clauson, Hagen, Darland, Loyet and Windom had started deep in this field and all quickly went to work on changing their standing. Especially Hagen. He was headed to the front in a hurry. After a furious battle with his teammate Davey Ray and BC, he started seriously reeling in the leader. He caught Coons, got around and pulled out to a bit of a lead, when Clauson got around Ray and set sail for the top two runners. And then just about the time it looked like we were going to have a 3 car dead heat finish as the laps wound down, the leaders got into some serious lapped traffic, where the Hawk applied the kill shot, by doing a masterful job of knifing through the backmarkers. It would be an understatement to say that he was very impressive. Coons was fast and tough the whole race. And Clauson got progressively better as the race went on. Like the night before, he just ran out of laps. The stage is set for a classic 50 lapper, on this great racing surface, for all the marbles, tomorrow night. High stakes, high speed warfare. I'm going to be there. That's for damn sure!
