You are on the money. One thing which is being assumed is that EVERY ONE of those 3,000 people would be willing to pay the $5 increase.
Not everyone will.
The gamble for the promoter is how many people will he lose and can the extra $5 offset the money that would be lost from those who choose not to come because the price went up? That includes hot dogs, hamburgers, cokes and beers. It might mean he actually makes less money. Most promoters have a pretty good idea of how much people will pay for a ticket.
And as far as sponsorship, for those of you who think it is so easy, I have a challenge. Pick a race team: ANY race team. Get their permission and go find them a sponsor. Then, come on here and tell everybody how it went.
It ain't that easy.
